The war of aggression that the Russian Federation has been waging against Ukraine since February 2022 raises questions for Christian peace and development work. The paper presents Misereor's thoughts and discussion points on local peace potentials in the Global South, arms deliveries and the inclusion of civil society and human security, with the aim of categorising them in the logic of peace.

Country brief

The migration partnership between Egypt and the EU has gained new momentum thanks to the most recent agreement on March 17. The background to this is the EU's concern about an increase in irregular arrivals, which is putting previous cooperation in the externalisation of European asylum responsibility to the test. How will the partnership be implemented in practice? What impact does it have on migrants, refugees and the partner country? These questions are answered in the current country brief by Misereor and Brot für die Welt on the EU migration partnership with Egypt. (The German version will follow shortly)

Briefing: EU supply chain law - guard rail for sustainable development
Protecting human rights and facilitating peace
Corporate responsibility
Shaping a sustainable global economy

The Commission, Council and Parliament had actually already agreed on an EU supply chain law in December 2023. However, since the FDP's last-minute U-turn and the German government's announced abstention, it is in danger of failing in the EU Council. This would be a serious setback for sustainable development worldwide. The law would not only prevent human rights violations and environmental damage in the global operations of European companies and give those affected access to justice. Contrary to what the FDP claims, it would also promote economic development in the Global South.

The 194 member states of the World Health Organisation (WHO) have set themselves the goal of agreeing on a global pandemic agreement by the World Health Assembly in May 2024. They want to use it to learn lessons from COVID-19 and be better equipped to prevent, prepare for and combat future pandemics.
At the same time, they are also negotiating the reform of the International Health Regulations (IHR), the WHO's only binding regulations under international law to date, to prevent and contain the cross-border spread of diseases.

A mid-term review of the 2024 traffic light government.

With this review paper, an alliance of 43 organisations and associations from development cooperation, peasant agriculture, organic farming, the environment and the food trade are once again putting the (international) commitment of the German government to the test. Four years ago, numerous organisations and associations from this spectrum had already called on the German government to change course in line with the guiding principle of agroecology in a position paper. The mid-term of the traffic light coalition is now a current opportunity for us to highlight the light and shadows of the government's work to date and to take stock.

‘Ensuring food security worldwide’ is the second of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Misereor has long supported this goal and, together with partners from many countries in the Global South, is committed to promoting ecologically sustainable small-scale farming that enables a wide variety of food to be produced on small plots of land. The partner organisations are committed to strengthening local communities and their land rights, and to ensuring a fair distribution of water, seeds and food – including the Rural Pastoral Care Service of the Diocese of Pasto in Colombia, whose work is the focus of the 2024 Lenten campaign. This year’s Lent campaign invites us to also reflect on agricultural production in Germany and our own lifestyles.

Debating at school, long established in Anglo-Saxon countries, is also being practised more and more in Germany.
Debating in particular promotes skills and attitudes that are essential for life in a democratic, diverse society: the ability to listen, to respond to one another, to find one's own point of view, to deal with opposing positions and to argue fairly. With this in mind, the "Junior Debating in the Middle East" project supported by Misereor brings together pupils from Jerusalem, the West Bank, Cairo and, most recently, Osnabrück.

Position paper

The African continent has been high on the agenda of German economic, foreign and development policy for several years now. This includes efforts to initiate economic reform measures in selected African countries and thus mobilise private investment by actors from the global North (including German companies). This is where the Compact with Africa (CwA) comes in - an initiative launched in 2017 under the German G20 presidency to further develop structural framework conditions and promote foreign direct investment in Compact countries.
