A large proportion of people worldwide are restricted in their participation. This is particularly true for women and girls, people with disabilities, Indigenous, black or queer people. They are also disproportionately affected by various crises, armed conflicts and poverty factors. In authoritarian power structures, their rights are the first to be restricted.
A socio-ecological transformation takes into account and changes the norms, roles and social systems that cause gender inequality and disadvantage marginalised groups, thereby combating poverty, conflict and inequality in the long term.
Misereor's commitment to equality
The majority of the projects that Misereor supports involve women and men equally. In addition, Misereor supports many projects on all three continents of the Global South that explicitly aim to achieve gender equality. This involves, for example, empowering women and girls to recognise and claim their rights, ensuring equal access to education and resources and eliminating gender-based violence. In order to bring about social change, it is important to involve men and win them over as stakeholders.
