A peaceful future is built when people listen to one another, remember their history and act together. This is precisely what Misereor’s partner organisation, Buja Sans Tabou, facilitates: through theatre performances, comics and music, young people engage with their country’s history. They tell the stories of everyday heroes and heroines who showed courage in difficult times.

At Buja Sans Tabou, it becomes clear what has caused people pain. And, at the same time, what makes Burundi strong: its culture, its stories, its community and the strength to find ways to come together.

Colonial rule, political crises and the 1993 civil war have left a deep mark on Burundi. In many families, these experiences are still hardly ever discussed. Georgette Mahwera’s story is different. A play tells her story, drawing attention to her courageous efforts alongside the women in her neighbourhood.

The Abahizi project in Burundi brings generations together: it draws attention to Burundi’s repressed history by retelling it from a female perspective. The focus is on three women.

Georgette Mahweras’ (centre) story is one of courage, solidarity and self-efficacy. During the civil war, she and other women in her neighbourhood worked together to combat division and violence.

Claudia Munyengabe (right) wrote the play that takes up this story and brings it to the stage. In this way, the theatre becomes a space where pain, memory and empathy can be shared and explored together.

Doddie Divana Niyongoma (left), meanwhile, is part of a comic-book group that explores Burundi’s past. Together, they translate the silence surrounding the past into images and comics that reach young people.

With your support, Misereor’s partner organisation Buja Sans Tabou can create spaces where young people can ask questions and discuss the answers with one another.

With your donation, we can…

Rediscover history: Comics open up new ways for young people to engage with their country’s history.
Foster courage and reconciliation: Creative workshops create spaces where young people can tell their stories.
Facilitate encounters: Theatre brings experiences to the stage and encourages people to talk to one another.

Let’s turn opportunities into reality. That’s when the future begins!

Colonial rule under Germany and Belgium deepened social divisions in Burundi. It fuelled violence and political crises. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, and many were forced to flee their homes. Today’s young people did not live through that period, yet hardly anyone talks to them about it. They are growing up in a country where the past is, on the one hand, ever-present and, at the same time, completely alien to them.

Your donation makes stories like these possible. Together, we can give people in
, Burundi, Germany and around the world hope and a future.
