Our goal: We want to work climate neutrally

We make comprehensive considerations and take practical steps to optimise our own ecological balance sheet. We want to avoid emissions - and only reduce and offset them as a secondary priority. We offset unavoidable emissions via the church's "Klima-Kollekte" compensation fund:

Last year, we supported carefully selected climate protection projects with 38,425 euros, offsetting 1,537 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This means that we are well on the way to working as climate-neutrally as possible.

Systematic environmental management according to EMAS

We have been working in accordance with the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since 2006. The first external audit took place in December 2012. Important steps towards improving our environmental footprint in recent years:

  • Sustainable purchasing
  • Recognising waste as a recyclable material
  • Economical use of water and electricity
  • Meat-free catering
  • Sustainable power supply
  • not unnecessarily fuelling the climate with heating
  • making the journey to work climate-friendly
  • Travelling by land instead of air and using public transport

Business trips outside Europe account for a large proportion of our CO2 emissions. We plan these trips to be as environmentally friendly as possible and offset unavoidable emissions. It is very likely that the further course of the pandemic and the increased use of digital communication channels will have an impact on future travel behaviour.

We buy sustainably

We purchase according to ecological, social and fair standards. In accordance with our sustainable procurement policy, we favour environmentally friendly products, processes and services as well as fair trade goods.

Resources such as energy, paper and water are used as sparingly as possible. When it comes to waste, "avoid before recycle" and "recycle before dispose" apply.

We support the joint project of the Protestant regional churches and the Catholic dioceses "Future Shopping"

How we offset our CO2 emissions

Misereor is a co-partner of Klima-Kollekte, the CO2 compensation fund of Christian churches. Unavoidable emissions can be offset through climate protection projects run by Klima-Kollekte. In a climate protection project supported by Misereor in India, Dalit communities are given access to renewable energy. Climate-friendly solar lamps make harmful paraffin superfluous and ensure a direct reduction in CO2 emissions. The emission rights generated in this way are sold via the Climate Collect.

„The support of the urban community is a sign of the strong commitment to climate neutrality“

Climate-neutral Aachen 2030

With over 100 local stakeholders, we are taking responsibility for the common goal of a CO2-neutral city and are working together for a sustainable, liveable and healthy Aachen.
