South Africa is characterised by great inequality: while children from the privileged middle and upper classes attend expensive public schools, children from the poorer housing estates, the so-called townships, are dependent on state schools. These schools are often overcrowded, poorly equipped and have unmotivated teachers. Many children cannot read and write properly and have few opportunities on the labour market. Poverty, broken family structures, violence and drug use characterise their everyday lives.
But there is hope for the children to escape the vicious circle of poverty. The Misereor partner organisation Masifunde was set up to give the new generation a chance. Masifunde not only promotes academic achievement, but also the personal development and social commitment of the children.
