There is great insecurity in Togo. Harvests are becoming increasingly scarce and many families are struggling to survive. Traditional grain varieties have been displaced because imported maize from Europe or rice from Asia are more readily available and cheaper. As a result of this dependency, hunger and poverty have increased dramatically in rural regions and many families do not know how to feed themselves and their children adequately.
But in the midst of this difficult situation, there is hope: the POUST cooperative has rediscovered the original African grain fonio and supports small farming families, mostly women, in its cultivation. Fonio is healthy, strengthens independence, generates income and sets an example for local food security - even in times of climate change.
