The value of good coffee
In the small Peruvian villages of Tailin, Chonta and San Cristobal, you can meet small farmers who grow coffee, cocoa and sugar cane in the hills beyond the dry steppe. The products are later shipped to Germany via the Norandino cooperative and sold there by GEPA.
The professionalisation of small-scale farming creates work in the villages for which the people are paid fairly: the cooperative pays them 400 soles, around 100 euros, for a bag of coffee. On the world market, producers would only receive the equivalent of 80 euros for the same amount of coffee.

Coffee cooperative increases income and fosters education
The small Norandino cooperative has become a flourishing company. Every year, 95,000 tonnes of coffee are produced here, 70 per cent of which goes to Fair Trade in Europe.
Since the cooperative has enabled small farmers have to sell their harvest abroad as Fair Trade products, people's income has increased significantly. And the children also benefit from this: they no longer work in the fields, but go to school instead.
Climate change threatens the future
Nevertheless, the conditions under which small farmers in northern Peru and around the world will have to work in the future are becoming more difficult: climate change is causing droughts, water shortages and increasing plagues of insects.
In addition to these challenges, fair prices need to be determined in the long term and it must be discussed and what we in the Global North are prepared to pay for good products. In view of the increasing quality of products, from coffee and cocoa to whole cane sugar, it is entirely appropriate to move away from the "cheap is good" attitude.
