Nigeria: Clean water for a healthy life
Clean water and reliable harvests? In Nigeria, these are by no means a given, and for many people they are a pressing concern every single day.
With your donation, you can help strengthen the local water supply and support Misereor’s global work to combat hunger, disease and poverty.
- Africa
In north-eastern Nigeria, many people lack access to safe drinking water. Contaminated water and poor hygiene lead to serious illnesses, which pose a particular threat to young children. The majority of the population relies on agriculture for their livelihood; without a reliable water supply, harvests are uncertain and entire families face the threat of starvation.
Well construction as a long-term solution
The Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) in the Diocese of Yola is specifically committed to the construction and maintenance of water points in rural communities. By drilling boreholes and digging wells, as well as repairing damaged wells, village communities are provided with a reliable supply of clean drinking water.
At the same time, JDPC staff train smallholder farming families in sustainable farming methods, enabling them to manage their land sustainably, increase their yields and enjoy a more balanced diet.
A new fountain for an entire community
Beauty Timothy from the village of Tamu remembers well the time when she had to wait for hours every day at unprotected waterholes, laboriously drawing murky, germ-contaminated water.
Thanks to a new well in her home village, she can now fetch fresh drinking water in less than 30 minutes. This not only saves an enormous amount of time and energy in her daily life: her family’s health has improved noticeably, and there is now enough water to ensure a good harvest from her small vegetable patch.
Sustainable development through water supply
Please support this initiative to ensure long-term access to clean drinking water and a healthy diet. Every contribution helps to break the vicious circle of illness and malnutrition – both locally in Nigeria and worldwide.
Here’s what our local partners achieved last year:
- Around 40,000 people benefited from the water and food aid initiatives.
- Around 3,000 smallholder farmers were trained in sustainable agriculture.
- 6,000 people gained new access to safe drinking water.
- 11 water points were newly constructed or repaired.
- 10 listening companions were trained to provide psychosocial support to traumatised people in crisis-hit regions.

To ensure that your donation has an impact in the long term, Misereor uses a small proportion for important administration an related tasks. This way, we make sure that projects are selected carefully and implemented responsibly and that their effects are regularly monitored. Should it not be possible to use your donation as planned, we will use it where it is currently needed most.

Dioceses of Yola and Maiduguri
Misereor works with the dioceses of Yola and Maiduguri in north-east Nigeria. They are implementing a comprehensive and sustainable water and soil conservation programme to ensure that the population is supplied with food and, above all, clean drinking water.
