Almost all states of the United Nations have agreed to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children's rights are human rights. In reality, however, children's rights are often violated. The poster provides an introduction to the topic of children's rights. Together with your pupils, consider how children's rights can be helped to achieve a breakthrough.

In all countries around the world, children take on a variety of jobs, for example in the family or in the family business. But where is the line between normal cooperation and exploitative child labour?

Pupils learn about different forms of child labour from siblings Emmanuelle and Daniel on a cocoa plantation and two other siblings from the Ivory Coast and Germany. The bottom section of the poster illustrates selected child labour criteria from the ILO (International Labour Organization). The children can use the illustrations to assess and discuss what constitutes exploitative child labour.

What forms of violence and neglect do children experience both in the Global South and in Germany? Through the learning poster, pupils learn which forms of violence also exist in their everyday lives, what they should not put up with, what rights they have and how a partner project of Misereor works with children in Nairobi who have suffered violence. They also recognise that violence can occur in different places. In the bottom section of the poster, criteria for violence against children are illustrated. Around 42 per cent of refugees worldwide are minors. Many German school classes are attended by children and adolescents who have fled war and destruction - from Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine and other countries. The topic of "flight" is therefore highly topical. The educational poster conveys some basic facts; but behind the numbers are concrete fates. This is made clear by the stories of Anas, Najwa, Maria and Salma, which are told with pictures and drawings. The children come from Syria. Najwa and her friends have found refuge in neighbouring Lebanon, while Anas lives with his family in Germany. The poster also illustrates some basic children's rights that often fall by the wayside in war situations and when fleeing.

A largely unknown connection to Brazil is orange juice, which many children like to drink. 80% of the juiced oranges required for this come from Brazil, where they are often grown and harvested under unhealthy conditions. However, oranges also form the basis for many other products, from baking ingredients and body care products to scented oils.

In order to work with primary school pupils on the topic of oranges, we offer you instructions for an "orange suitcase". It consists of seven learning stations as well as craft and game instructions and also contains child-friendly explanations about fair trade. With a few additions, the orange suitcase can also be used in the orientation level.

Teaching materials for grades 1-5 on the topics of chocolate, cocoa, sugar and fair trade

Chocolate is one of the most popular sweets in Germany, especially among children. They are therefore often very interested in learning more about chocolate, its ingredients and its origin.

This booklet invites you to learn more about chocolate with children from the age of six. With learning and exercise ideas, games and activity suggestions, various aspects of chocolate production can be familiarised with: the raw materials cocoa and sugar and their production, the processing of chocolate and the history of cocoa are just a few examples. The children also get to know people who want to make a living from growing cocoa and sugar.

The Solibrot campaign allows us to look beyond our own backyard: at children in Burkina Faso, Kenya, India and other countries. They sometimes live in difficult conditions. Their staple food is not "daily bread" everywhere, but millet, maize or rice. They often have to work for a living instead of going to school. Some children have lost contact with their families and are eking out a living on the streets. Misereor projects want to give these children a better life and a future.

You and your pupils can support these projects with the Solibrot campaign. In the ring binder you will find, among other things, teaching modules on the topics of "Basic foods of the world" and "Children's rights", suggestions and materials for organising a project week as well as everything you need to carry out the campaign:

  • Bread recipes and table prayers from around the world,
  • an action plan,
  • a sample letter to parents,
  • a press release,
  • songs,
  • games,
  • a Thanksgiving service and much more

Each folder comes with a "Do you already know Misereor" poster; further posters can be ordered using the enclosed campaign form.

The collection of materials for religious education includes suggestions and learning modules that have been developed by teachers for distance learning in primary and lower secondary schools. They can also be used in face-to-face and alternating lessons. The hunger cloth by Lilian Moreno Sánchez is approached in different age-appropriate ways: associatively, cognitively, creatively. The picture is linked to the biblical message, the topic of justice using the example of Chile and the current coronavirus crisis.
