Challenges in the healthcare system
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, health centres are often without a reliable power supply. This means that vital operations and births are often carried out in the dark under precarious conditions. Malnutrition and epidemics such as malaria and cholera exacerbate the situation. Without constant electricity, medical care is severely limited, which leads to high mortality rates.
Clean energy for safe births
The project, led by the Bureau Diocésain des Oeuvres Médicales (BDOM), brings solar energy to the health centres in the diocese of Boma. Thanks to the solar systems, delivery rooms and operating theatres can now also be used safely at night. The constant power supply ensures that blood reserves, medicines and vaccines remain refrigerated and medical equipment functions reliably.
Long-term difference through solar energy
Your donation not only supports short-term improvements, but also ensures that health centres become independent of insecure power grids in the long term. This means that operations and births can be carried out more safely and more people can receive medical care. The savings from the elimination of diesel generators enable the purchase of more important medicines. There will also be more financial opportunities for good medical staff.
With your support, we can continue to bring solar power to health centres and thus improve the lives of thousands of people in the DR Congo. Your donation will help to ensure that safe births and life-saving interventions are possible at all times.
This is what our joint success looks like
In the year 2023
- 24 out of 33 health facilities in the diocese of Boma were equipped with solar power
- 73 per cent of delivery rooms now have electric lighting, which has significantly increased the safety and quality of births
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
Our local partner organisations
Congolese Caritas
Misereor has been supporting health projects run by Congolese Caritas for decades. Caritas has set up a network of health centres to provide medical care to poor people in the various regions of this huge country. The health centres are run by nurses who are able to treat the most common diseases locally and attend normal births.
Father Piumatti
In Kanyabayonga, the people are supported by Father Piumatti, an experienced Misereor partner who has already implemented several projects of this kind.
