Hunger, climate change, serious crises
Haiti is the poorest country in Latin America and has long been unable to feed itself. Because the forests have been radically cut down, the country is being hit ever harder by hurricanes. Climate change is exacerbating the situation. Many families have fled to the capital. Here, however, poverty and violence are escalating. The security situation is catastrophic. Thousands of internally displaced people are now seeking refuge in the countryside again.
How the forest garden helps
Our partner organisations in Haiti have found a sustainable solution: forest gardens, also known as agroforestry systems. They feed entire villages. In the forest garden, the plants support each other following the example of nature. Fruit trees and shrubs keep out the wind. Fast-growing vegetable plants provide food. Their compost fertilises the soil. Donate now for this innovative project!
Education for growth and good harvests
Our partner organisations lay the foundations. Above all through education. They impart knowledge that no hurricane can take away from families: Planting forest gardens, tending forest gardens, caring for goats and chickens, processing food for sale. They provide seeds, seedlings and irrigation systems. And they help families to organise themselves into groups and networks. Here, people help each other, save and invest together. An important contribution to peace in the country.
Forest gardens help the whole country
Your donations make it possible! 40,000 families in Haiti have already joined the "Network for Agroecology and Sustainable Development" PADED. They plant fruit and crop trees and grow a variety of vegetables and cereals. They often harvest more than they consume. In this way, they improve the supply of healthy food in Haiti. The people who flee to the countryside can also be provided for. In addition, many green islands are being created that improve the local climate and protect the land from storm damage.
Living well in the countryside - anywhere in the world
It is not only in Haiti that people are struggling with the consequences of climate change. It is also being felt in Myanmar. That is why we are also supporting the local people here to combat poverty and protect creation.
This is what our joint success looks like
- Over 50,000 forest gardens have been planted and sustainably improved so that they provide for the families involved all year round.
- The landscape has changed: Fruit and crop trees, soil protection walls and a variety of cereals and vegetables help to preserve livelihoods.
- Many people interested in organic farming, especially young people and women, have been trained in agricultural and social skills.
- Effective irrigation techniques and irrigation systems have improved the water supply.
- The families have set up self-managed seed banks. This means that there is always enough seed available locally.
- Animals such as chickens and goats receive better nutrition and medical care. This has made animal husbandry more profitable.
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
Our local partner organisations
GADRU
Misereor works with several local agroecological organisations in Haiti, which are supported by the nine dioceses.
They operate from individual centres spread throughout the country. These are supported by the GADRU advisory service, which is run by the Jesuit order.
