School instead of child labour
In the fight against child labour, Misereor relies on a holistic approach. While children need education and training in order to enter a profession that offers prospects, the living conditions of their families must also be improved at the same time so that the children are not forced to work.
In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, more than 30,000 children work in the glass and jewellery industry. The work is extremely harmful to their health and often leads to eye infections, tuberculosis, asthma or postural defects. The organisation Vikas Sansthan prepares child labourers to attend a state school through non-formal education.
From the tea plantation to the school bench
It is a big step for child labourers to move from their familiar working environment to the school system. Mentors from the development organisation SPAN help with the transition from work to school. They accompany the children and support them in catching up with their peers.
This is what our joint success looks like
- Around 150 were freed from child labour last year
- Around 400 children are taught in education centres
- 31 self-help groups offer support to families
- 50 families are provided with food
- Over 400 children and parents have received a free health check-up this year
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
Our local partner organisations
Vikas Sansthan
In the fight against child labour and its consequences, Misereor works in India with the partner organisation Vikas Sansthan, among others. The organisation has been committed to combating child labour since 1994. The employees carry out measures to rehabilitate former child labourers from the glass and jewellery industry and actively campaign for the observance of children's rights.
SPAN
SPAN ("Society for People's Awareness") is a non-profit organisation founded in 1989 that campaigns against child labour and for the poor in the Indian state of West Bengal. Most of the children who are forced to work in exploitative conditions come from the West Bengal region.
