Madagascar: VOZAMA for the village schools
The lives of children in Madagascar are insecure. Their parents are often unable to feed them, the distances to school are too long and the environment - and therefore their future - is not protected.
With your donation you support VOZAMA and help children to learn to read, write and do maths!

Too poor to learn
Around a third of people in Madagascar cannot read or write. Only two out of three children are enrolled in school. In rural regions, the nearest school is usually kilometres away. Families are often too poor to buy school uniforms, exercise books and books.
The Misereor partner organisation VOZAMA organises the construction of schools and trains teachers. The initiative also helps with the purchase of pens, exercise books, books and other school materials that most families cannot afford.
Out of poverty with education
The school project breaks the vicious circle of poverty and illiteracy. Every year, around 11,000 children learn to read, write and do maths in the village schools. When the children grow up, they can make the long journey to the nearest state school. More than half of them go on to achieve a higher level of education. Around 1,000 young adults have trained as teachers.
With education comes development
The villages continue to develop through school. Extracurricular activities, such as the reforestation of fallow land, are also supported. For example, VOZAMA promotes village development with the help of tree nurseries. In Madagascar, periods of drought are occurring more and more frequently. During these periods, many people are affected by crop failures and hunger. In VOZAMA's tree nurseries, the expected production of young plants was significantly exceeded despite considerable challenges such as poor-quality seed, caterpillar infestation and unusually heavy rainfall.
Help us with your donation so that the hope of Madagascar's children can continue to grow.
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.

VOZAMA
Misereor works with the literacy movement VOZAMA in Madagascar. The name is an abbreviation and means "Let's save the children of Madagascar". The initiative was founded in 1995 to break the vicious circle of illiteracy and poverty. Almost 1,000 employees are now involved in VOZAMA. They do this largely on a voluntary basis, as they only receive a small allowance for their work. In addition to primary education, VOZAMA also promotes various development activities for parents, offers counselling services for health care and environmental protection and campaigns for children's and women's rights.
