Develop confidence in your own strengths
A vegetable garden on the roof, computer courses, theatre - the children and young people in the Misereor projects for street children develop their talents and develop confidence in their own strengths through a wide range of activities. In addition, the team accompanies the families, supports parents who want to become independent and provides psychological counselling.
The tough everyday life of street children in Brazil
The lives of street children in large cities such as Recife and Caruaru are hard and dangerous. Some have fled from misery and violence at home. Others have to work on the streets to support their families. Many steal or prostitute themselves out of necessity and have neither a school-leaving certificate nor vocational training.
Lobbying for children's rights
The organisation "Grupo Ruas e Praças" also focuses on social work, educational services and support for families. In addition, the employees strengthen the rights of children and young people through political lobbying.
95% of the children who complete an elementary education course with the "COMVIVA" initiative later achieve a state school leaving certificate.
Vocational training for street children
In Caruaru, the "COMVIVA" initiative looks after street children. In addition to leisure activities, the girls and boys can complete vocational training here, for example to become a baker. Elementary education courses prepare them for state schools. With success! 95 per cent of the children there graduate from school.
Support street children's projects with Misereor so that girls and boys in Brazil can live in dignity and without violence. Street children in other countries such as India and Kenya also need your support.
This is what our joint success looks like
- Access for children and young people to school education, training and work has been created
- Home visits have taken place to advise families on how they can improve their living situation
- Psychological counselling for children and young people, as well as the provision of food and hygiene articles were offered
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
Our local partner organisations
COMVIVA
Misereor supports numerous street children's organisations in major Brazilian cities and also supports street children in India and other countries. For example, "COMVIVA " in Caruaru, which was founded in 1987 with the help of the local diocese, or the group "Grupo Ruas e Praças". The initiatives are also involved in political lobbying with various street children networks in favour of the interests and rights of street children and their families.
