A safe roof over every head

Every day, hundreds of thousands of people in poor neighbourhoods in Peru and Ecuador fight for a better life, security and a future for themselves and their families.

For decades, Misereor's partner organisation Hogar de Cristo in Ecuador has been helping families to build small houses made from prefabricated elements, which the families assemble themselves with a little help. But dignified living requires more than just a roof and four walls! That's why our partner also focuses on social work and motivates people to make their neighbourhood worth living in. People learn together, work together and support each other. Despite their own worries, everyone sees what their neighbour needs - and lends a hand when necessary.

Living with dignity is more than just living safely

The Peruvian organisation CIDAP provides support in the run-down neighbourhoods in the centre of Lima, where there is great need behind the picturesque facades. They carefully renovate run-down houses in order to create livable living space for people. "Lively city centres instead of dead commercial zones" is the motto with which the residents demand their right to live in the city centre.

On the northern outskirts of Lima, the poorest people live in unimaginable conditions. Not only do landslides threaten their lives, but illegal rubbish dumps also make people and especially children sick. CIDAP represents the interests of the residents to the authorities and politicians. By planting organic urban gardens, families can add healthy vegetables to their diet and improve their health.

This is what our joint success looks like

  • Housing was created for people living in poverty and the homeless
  • Native trees have been reforested
  • people have gained access to healthy food through community gardens

Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
