Ecuador: Living with dignity in poor neighbourhoods
A safe roof over their heads. Protection from violence. A small plot of land that provides healthy food: for families in poor neighbourhoods, these basic necessities cannot be taken for granted. It is good that they can count on the support of Misereor’s partners.

A safe roof over one’s head and a real home
Living conditions in the poverty-stricken neighbourhoods of Guayaquil in Ecuador are harsh. Families who are forced to move here often initially make do with dilapidated shelters made of plastic sheeting and reeds, with no solid floor and offering no protection from the elements or crime. Misereor’s partner organisation, Hogar de Cristo, helps them to build small but sturdy homes using prefabricated building components. The families lend a hand with the construction, learn basic building skills and, in this way, create a stable home for themselves through their own efforts.
Community makes us strong: More than just four walls
A dignified life requires more than just a roof over one’s head. That is why the project focuses on holistic social work and solidarity. In neighbourhood groups, people organise mutual support, create community gardens and refurbish old furniture or building materials so that they can be of use to others again. This provides fresh food, helps with building and furnishing homes, and strengthens community spirit in the neighbourhood.
Health and prospects for the youngest children
In densely populated, deprived urban neighbourhoods in particular, children are exposed to enormous environmental and health risks – ranging from malnutrition to gradual poisoning from industrial and vehicle emissions. Through targeted health screenings and educational programmes, the local partners are laying the foundations to ensure that girls and boys can grow up healthy.

- Decent housing: Sturdy , affordable homes for homeless people and families living in extreme poverty.
- Local food security: Creation of community gardens to ensure reliable access to fresh, healthy food.
- Environmental and climate protection: Reforestation with native tree species to stabilise threatened slopes in residential areas.
- Child healthcare: Targeted medical screenings and support for families in crisis.

Corporación viviendas del Hogar de Cristo
In Guayaquil, Misereor works together with the organisation "Corporación viviendas del Hogar de Cristo", founded by the Jesuit order, which has been supporting the inhabitants of the poor districts there since 1971 in improving their living conditions in the long term. Hogar de Cristo has already reached more than one million people with its work. The organisation has been successful with its house project for decades. A complete house currently costs 1,635 euros.
