Teaching material: The real St Nicholas and the search for justice in cocoa production

  • Lower Secondary Level
  • Religion, Ethics, Social Sciences

We’ve been seeing chocolate St Nicholas figures everywhere in supermarkets for several weeks now. But the journey they’ve undertaken to get there remains largely unknown: how is cocoa produced? What role does exploitative child labour play in this? What solutions are there to this problem? And what does Fair Trade have to do with Saint Nicholas? The pupils explore these questions in this lesson unit.

By exploring the real Saint Nicholas and his values, the pupils are encouraged to see things from a different perspective. Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, spoke out against social injustices in his day and thus remains – even today, at a time when the rich and poor are drifting further and further apart worldwide – a role model for social justice.
