20-year-old Nyikueth Chuol Yoah gratefully provides herself and her children with a warm meal. She lost her parents, her husband and her home in the civil war in South Sudan and Sudan. She finds refuge in the Tanzite camp in Malakal. Here she gets food. Here she feels safe.
The war in Sudan is considered the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. More than 12 million people are fleeing war, hunger and destruction. They are looking for protection inside and outside the country. The majority of them are dependent on emergency aid. In Sudan and neighbouring countries such as South Sudan, which have taken in the most people, a huge famine is looming. In Sudan alone, 25 million people are already affected by acute hunger.
Like most of the refugees, Nyikueth Chuol Yoah grew up in South Sudan and fled to Sudan as a child to escape the civil war. After the outbreak of war in Sudan, she returned to her home country. However, only Sudanese refugees are permanently admitted to the UN camps in South Sudan; the returnees fall through the international aid net and are left to fend for themselves. In the transit camp in Malakal, they initially find the support they are hoping for before travelling on to the places where they want to stay. There they can rest, eat and take a deep breath. Find out more in the video:
The transit camp in Malakal is confronted with a large number of returnees. Single women with children in particular are in urgent need of food. Misereor supports Caritas on site in distributing the necessary food. With regular meals, people can regain new strength for a better future. But with the increasing number of returnees, the need is growing.
Short-term emergency aid is followed by long-term support in South Sudan: after their stay in the transit camp, the returnees are taken to various destinations in the Great Upper Nile region. Thanks to material support in the form of seeds and small agricultural tools, they have the chance to build a new life there.
