Many girls experience a hard, unfree life right from birth. They are often not allowed to go to school or take up a profession and do not grow up unscathed. They experience their mothers' fear of violence, homelessness and hunger. This inequality affects women and girls worldwide, especially in poor regions.
Women stand up. Reach out your hand!
But hope is growing. With your help! Misereor partner organisations around the world empower women. They help them to protect themselves and demand their rights. Everyone wins: health, good food, more income for families and peaceful, respectful coexistence.
Why specifically support women and girls?
Women and girls around the world are fighting discrimination in education, health, labour and politics. Despite the human right to equality, they often do not have the same opportunities as men.
In many cultures, women and girls are assigned a lower social status than men and boys. The consequences are different. For example, they cannot earn their own income and are dependent on their husbands. They are also underrepresented at a political level. Their needs and interests often go unheard.
Strengthening women's rights and equality through education, healthcare and economic opportunities is crucial for their independence and social role.
Misereor is committed to strengthening women's rights and working towards a world in which women and girls have the same opportunities and possibilities as men and boys.
How Misereor helps women and girls in the Global South
Three continents, one goal: safety, a future and self-determination for women and girls!
Bolivia and Colombia
Safety, dignity and participation for women
Violence against women and girls is still the order of the day. Moreover, poverty here is particularly female: women are excluded from professions with good income opportunities and tied down by unpaid labour. Help to put this injustice on the political agenda and finally overcome it!
Timor-Leste
Empowering women and achieving self-determination
Girls and women in Timor-Leste are often affected by oppression and social marginalisation by male family members. It is hardly possible for them to lead a self-determined life. There is often a lack of education and vocational training. But the young women seize their opportunity when it presents itself.
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
