The ZDF fundraising gala "Die schönsten Weihnachts-Hits", hosted by Carmen Nebel for the last time, was particularly successful this year: by midnight, more than 3.2 million euros had been raised for the work of Bread for the World and Misereor - a new record result. The sum was also raised thanks to performances by stars such as Andrea Berg, Wincent Weiss, Albert Hammond, ice queen Ann Sophie, the band Boss Hoss and Matze Knop. The donation hotline was also staffed by well-known faces such as Paul Breitner, Maria Höfl-Riesch, Christine Neubauer, Ingolf Lück, Katrin Müller-Hohenstein and Johann Lafer. The entrepreneur Johannes Zurnieden, head of Phoenix-Reisen, who has special ties to Misereor, once again showed his generosity. He donated one million euros. A large donation totalling one million euros also came from a person with special ties to Bread for the World.
Films about projects in four African countries gave viewers an idea of the many ways in which their donations can support people in need. The films focused on improving the supply of clean drinking water, converting agriculture to more drought-resistant crops, combating child mortality and integrating young people in neighbourhoods with high poverty rates.
Concrete improvements in everyday life
The President of Bread for the World, Dagmar Pruin, said: "The projects presented are examples of how effective our work is around the world. For the people on the ground, their everyday lives and the lives of their families are improving in a very tangible way. Every euro donated changes the world every day." Misereor Managing Director Andreas Frick also expressed his thanks for the great solidarity with people in disadvantaged regions of the world: "Bear one another's burdens. I have been travelling with this guiding principle from the Bible for several decades and, especially in the current times, I feel that every effort for each other contributes to a fairer world. This is exactly how Misereor works: Together. Global. Just."
