On the occasion of the United Nations (UN) World Food Report published today, Andreas Frick, the new Chief Executive of Misereor, is calling for cuts in the fight against hunger and poverty to be reversed.
"Up to 757 million people worldwide are chronically undernourished. None of these fates should leave us untouched. Every person who goes hungry is one too many. In 2015, the global community agreed to end hunger worldwide by 2030. More ambitious efforts are urgently needed to achieve this goal! Compared to 2015, there are now 163 million more hungry people. Yet the world has become richer since then and there is enough food for everyone! The causes of hunger - inequality, wars and natural disasters exacerbated by the climate crisis - are well known. The G20 wants to prioritise the fight against hunger and poverty, but at the same time the German government is cutting aid to the poorest. Humanitarian aid is being more than halved and development cooperation is being cut by a billion. Promises to people affected by hunger and poverty must be followed by action. Progress in the fight against child malnutrition shows that political will and international efforts can have an impact.
Misereor's partner organisations around the world are working to enable people to free themselves from hunger and poverty. These people rely on our financial and political support for their good and important work. The German government must ask itself how it justifies the planned budget cuts in view of the global development of poverty and hunger."
Misereor's work against hunger and malnutrition
Misereor was founded in 1958 as a "work against hunger and disease in the world". Since then, Misereor has focussed on long-term hunger relief. This is achieved, among other things, by strengthening smallholder agriculture and local food systems. In acute cases, Misereor provides emergency aid to ensure basic food supplies. Misereor currently supports almost 900 projects that contribute to improving food security worldwide with almost 316 million euros. Andreas Frick has been Managing Director of Misereor since July.
