Tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, marks the start of this year's Solibrot campaign, which the Katholischer Deutscher Frauenbund e.V. (KDFB) is organising for the twelfth time in cooperation with Misereor, the Catholic organisation for development cooperation. During Lent (5 March to 19 April 2025), numerous KDFB branches and bakeries across Germany will be taking part in the solidarity campaign.
On the initiative of committed KDFB branches, many bakeries will be offering solidarity bread during Lent. These loaves are sold with a benefit share; the proceeds go to Misereor projects that make a lasting contribution to improving the living conditions of women and girls in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Together, KDFB and Misereor are calling on people to make a conscious decision to buy sandwiches during Lent and thus promote solidarity and justice.
Fair and peaceful
KDFB Vice President Annette Fischer and Misereor Managing Director Andreas Frick jointly emphasise the crucial role that women play in the projects supported locally: They are committed to good care, fair working conditions and peaceful coexistence. Especially in regions affected by poverty and conflict, their commitment is crucial for sustainable peace.
Fischer also emphasises how valuable the exchange through the Solibrot campaign is: "We can learn a lot from the women in the projects in the Global South. Direct contact and mutual understanding are important in order to bring about change together." The campaign strengthens the network of women worldwide and enables them to stand up for each other in solidarity.
The Solibrot campaign takes place as part of the Misereor Lent campaign, which is dedicated to the topic of human dignity in 2025. This year's partner country is Sri Lanka.
The Catholic German Women's Association (KDFB) is an independent women's organisation with 130,000 members nationwide. Since its foundation in 1903, it has campaigned for the equal participation of women in politics, society and the church.
