As the situation continues to worsen following the devastating floods and dam bursts in eastern Pakistan, Misereor is initially providing 50,000 euros for emergency relief measures, with further aid being examined. Misereor's Pakistani partner organisation Civil Society Human & Institutional Development Program (CHIP) has already started to provide people in particularly remote areas in the Layyah district with food and clean water.
"The extent of the flooding and the destruction of entire villages and towns, agricultural land and livestock is devastating. Millions of people in the affected areas in eastern Pakistan have lost all their livelihoods and are in urgent need of help," report local staff. With the financial support of Misereor, CHIP was able to build emergency shelters in several villages in the Layyah district after the previous flood disasters in 2022, which were able to withstand the current floods. Nevertheless, many more houses have been destroyed. Emergency aid packages and clean water are therefore urgently needed. The Misereor partner organisation will provide aid in a total of 17 villages in Layyah and supply the people there with emergency aid packages, clean water and medicines, as well as constructing emergency shelters.
"The situation in Pakistan is becoming more dramatic by the day," explains Elmar Noé, Head of Misereor's Asia Department. The severe flooding is once again hitting a country that has been severely affected by the consequences of climate change and economic hardship. The country cannot cope with the current situation and further adaptation measures to climate-related disasters on its own!" According to the World Food Programme, almost one in five people in Pakistan suffered from acute food insecurity in 2024. 18 per cent of children are malnourished and 40 per cent suffer from stunted growth.
