Following the devastating flash floods in Nepal, Misereor is providing 20,000 euros in emergency aid to its local partner organisations in Nepal. They are initially supplying 200 households with food and hygiene kits in the particularly hard-hit districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Misereor is appealing for donations so that it can rapidly scale up its emergency aid.

“The destruction is immense and the challenges are enormous. For our network, solidarity with the affected families is now the top priority. It is a matter of getting relief supplies to the affected communities quickly and thereby giving people hope during this difficult time,” said Saroj Nepal of Misereor’s partner, the Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP). Their network is initially coordinating aid for 200 households in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, providing them with food and hygiene kits.

In order to provide comprehensive assistance, Misereor is urgently appealing for donations. “First and foremost, we must ensure that people in the particularly hard-hit districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading in northern Nepal, near the border with China, can survive over the coming days and weeks. Misereor’s partner organisations, such as the COCAP network and United Mission Nepal, have strong networks in these regions and can organise aid very quickly where it is most needed,” reports Elmar Noé, Head of the Asia Department at Misereor. “We are also monitoring the situation in the regions as far as northern India, where the river’s floodwaters are continuing to spread.”

The survivors are now left with nothing. In the long term, enormous efforts will be required for reconstruction. Thousands of families have lost everything: their homes, their livelihoods, access to healthcare and sources of income. The roads and bridges in the communities and villages along the Trishuli River have been completely destroyed. Misereor has been active in Nepal for many decades and currently supports 20 local organisations and nationwide networks.
