Most of Europe lives in abundance: full shelves, running water, unlimited electricity and heat. Those who wear the glasses of prosperity can see the world in abundance. This is a privilege and a challenge. Because what is enough for me anyway?
Many people, especially the poor, are suffering enormously from the numerous crises, such as the energy crisis, food crisis, peace crisis, coronavirus crisis, climate crisis and so many other crises. In all these crises, we are seeing the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer.
1 August 2024 is this year's World Overload Day. This means that all the resources available to us for one year have already been used up. We are living beyond our means and violating the planetary boundaries of our Earth. Our water and energy consumption, our waste production, our CO2 emissions - all of these contribute to threatening ecosystems and increasing climate change. But it doesn't have to be this way. It is possible for everyone to live a good life while protecting our planet.
This is exactly where we can take responsibility by allowing ourselves new freedoms. Setting clear boundaries opens up opportunities for socio-ecological transformation - individually and systemically. Let us all be part of the change and act frugally with our heads, hearts and hands. Because that is sufficiency - a way of life that asks itself the following questions:
What do I need for my good life? When do I have enough? What am I prepared to give so that suffering can be limited? Am I living for a world in which there is enough for everyone?
