The situation in Nairobi
In Kenya, many children live on the streets, especially in the capital Nairobi, where poverty and violence characterise daily life. It is estimated that there are at least 60,000 young people without a permanent home. Girls living on the streets are particularly vulnerable and often victims of violence and sexual exploitation. Many of them flee precarious family circumstances, but an even harder life often awaits them on the streets.
A second chance for Brenda
Brenda, 12 years old, lived on the street with her mother and eight siblings. The family searched for food and money in shopping centres and rubbish tips. When Brenda met a social worker from the Rescue Dada Centre in 2023, her life changed. She received counselling, went back to school and her mother received support to start a small business. "I am happy that I can go back to school," says Brenda. "I hope that my friends from the street will also get this chance."
Our partner: the Rescue Dada Centre
The Rescue Dada Centre (RDC) has been offering these girls a place of refuge since 1991. The centre supports girls between the ages of 5 and 16 with medical, therapeutic and educational assistance. The aim is to give the girls a long-term perspective and to reintegrate them into a stable environment. It is particularly important to involve and support the families.
Your donation helps to give girls like Brenda a better future. In addition to rescuing girls from the streets, the RDC offers education, therapy and vocational training. This enables the girls to lead a self-determined life.
This is what our joint success looked like last year
- 80 girls admitted to the RDC
- 517 therapy sessions offered
- 39 girls supported to attend secondary school
Sometimes we receive more donations for a project than was granted to the legal holder of the respective project. The projects listed here are examples of the work Misereor supports all over the world. If donations for a project exceed the amount granted to its legal holder, we allocate the surplus to other projects with a similar concept.
Our local partner organisations
Rescue Dada Centre
Misereor works with the Rescue Dada Centre in Nairobi. It was set up in 1991 by the Archdiocese of Nairobi as one of the few street children programmes in Africa that explicitly looks after girls and young mothers. The organisation, which is staffed by professionals and numerous volunteers, is the only one in Nairobi that provides street social work for girls.
The Rescue Dada Centre works closely with other local organisations, is also politically active on behalf of street girls and, thanks to its good local network, procures large quantities of donations in kind that directly benefit the girls.
